Many Bible scholars feel that 1 Corinthians 111-16 ranks among the most difficult of all texts in the New Testament to understand. What exactly were the issues? Was Paul teaching about hair or veils? Or both? How do these teachings apply to you and me today? Joel R. Chipman brings clarity to a complex passage in his book, Are We Spitting Hairs?

When I saw that a book such as this was written by a man who used to subscribe to this teaching I could not get a hold of the book fast enough. When it arrived I ate it up as a puppy who was starving.
You see, as a woman who has lived by this error of teaching for many years, and many years of fear I should add, I could not let this book pass me by. I needed much counseling of proper scripture and proper teaching of scripture to see the light, so to speak.
I found this book very helpful and inline with everything I've been learning. Mr. Chipman humbly tells of his reasons to write a book such as this and his honesty is much appreciated.
There is no criticism in his book. Nor an attitude of "I'm right and everybody else is wrong," but it's just plain, honest to goodness scripture and proper scripture interpretation. He also gives insights into proper ways of looking at scripture in the beginning of his book which I have also found quite helpful.
I know this task he has accomplished was not an easy one for him I'm sure. I give him kudos for bringing this out in the spotlight. But a spotlight is exactly what the church needs pertaining to the error of the uncut hair doctrine.

Joel Chipman provides special insight in this well-researched, well-written and well-presented book regarding the role of women and her hair in the church. May be an eye-opener for many women in ultra-conservative churches. Joel's book is written in such a way as not to alienate, but he doesn't shy away from what the result his research reveals. Highly recommend the book for anyone who is struggling to understand this difficult passage of scripture.
Informative but very hard to read
Uncut, long hair for the ladies? Is that what this passage in I Cor. 11 really teaches? Pastor Joel Chipman, in his scholarly and sane approach to a subject that tears some conservative Christians apart in family, fellowship and friendship, clears the air in his "Are We Splitting Hairs". He looks at the subject without having an organizational gun to his head to parrot conclusions some have forced upon the female half of God's creation. You will love the basis of his summaries, his steady building of precept upon precept and the love you feel from his heart as he searches out with you this sensitive subject. FIVE stars, without a doubt.
